73-year-old husband gets life in prison for strangling wife

KELSO, Wash. (AP) — A judge has sentenced a 73-year-old man to life in prison without the possibility for parole for strangling his wife to death last year.

The Daily News reports Cleon Moen told the judge in court Friday that "he loved that woman" but never apologized for his actions.

Michelle Moen, 58, died in September 2015 from strangulation and was found with ax wounds to the head. Police say Moen then tried to kill himself by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Prosecutors said a previous domestic violence charge brought against Cleon Moen by his wife resulted in a hung jury and that the charge angered him, providing the motive for the killing. The couple was in the midst of divorcing when the slaying occurred.

A jury on Thursday found Moen guilty of first-degree murder.
