25-year-old man with outstanding warrant fatally shot by East Wenatchee officer during traffic stop

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — An East Wenatchee police officer fatally shot a 25-year-old with a man with an outstanding warrant during a traffic stop.

The Chelan County Sheriff's Office says the shooting happened at about 2 a.m. Saturday. The man shot has been identified as Cameron S. Ayers.

The officer had stopped a vehicle on Bellevue Street NW in Douglas County. According to the Chelan County Sheriff's Office, Ayers was in the vehicle and had an outstanding Department of Corrections warrant for escape from community custody.

The officer attempted to detain Ayers, deputies said. Three shots were fired sometime during the attempt.

Ayeres was allegedly found with two knives on his person.

Following the shots fired, Ayers was taken to the Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee where he later died.

The officer was not injured. He was placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated by a special unit.
