Student diver who failed to surface with class dies

SEATTLE -- A student who did not surface with the rest of her group Sunday afternoon in Elliott Bay and was later found by rescue crews has died, officials said.

The diver -- a woman in her 20s -- was pronounced dead at Harborview Medical Center, Seattle police said. Her identity and the exact cause of her death was not immediately released.

On Sunday, fire officials received calls of a student diver who did not surface with her partners during a dive near the 1900 block of Harborview Avenue SW in West Seattle.

After some time, a citizen diver working with rescue crews found the missing student diver face down on the bottom with her mask still on. Crews brought her to the surface and she was taken Harborview Medical center in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead.

Police reports show the visibility in Elliott Bay was very poor Sunday afternoon.
