Man with goal to run a marathon in all 59 U.S. National Parks heads to the Evergreen State

SEATTLE, Wash.-- A New York City based consultant decided to take some time off to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Parks. Most people would just go on a hike to say "Happy Birthday" to the National Park Service, but Bill Sycalik is going 26.2 miles farther.

He has vowed to run a marathon in all 59 national parks. Fittingly, he ran his 12th marathon right here in the land of the 12's over the weekend in the North Cascades National Park.

Sycalik said he wanted to combine distance running with the parks as a way to enjoy the most beautiful places in the world. As Washingtonians-- we know there are few places more beautiful than the North Cascades. What makes our North Cascades even greater-- the people who work for the park service. Sycalik said rangers helped him map his run in advance.

He has two more parks to check off here in Washington.  He plans to run the Olympic National Park on September 3 and the Mount Rainier National Park on September 10. He is inviting folks to join in with him-- whether that be running with him or just meeting up and saying hello. He said his dates are flexible depending on weather and the availability of people who want to join in.
