Two people hurt in crash on I-5 in Federal Way

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Two people were airlifted to the hospital after a crash Thursday afternoon on Interstate 5 in Federal Way.

According to Trooper Rick Johnson, a motorhome shifted lanes and was braking hard in traffic. A car in front of the motorhome noticed they wouldn't be able to stop and swerved into another lane. The motorhome then struck a red car, pushing it into the back of a box truck.

The male driver was able to crawl out of the vehicle. A female passenger was trapped inside and rescued by first responders.

Both were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The woman was listed in critical condition and the man in satisfactory, according to hospital officials.

Only two left lanes of southbound I-5 were open as of 3:00 p.m. WSDOT reported a backup of more than 5 miles.

According to WSDOT, the on-ramp is also closed due to the smoky crash. It's unclear what caused the crash.

Troopers said a medical helicopter was called to the scene. It's unknown how many people were hurt or the extent of their injuries.

Transportation officials first tweeted about the crash around 1:10 p.m. Thursday.

This crash comes just hours after a semi tanker rolled in Fife and began leaking fuel, forcing the closure of both directions of I-5 for nearly three hours.

Nobody was hurt in that crash and the freeway is back open. However, residual delays were expected to last into the afternoon.
