Sewage spill closes beaches in parts of Liberty Bay

KEYPORT, Wash. -- The Kitsap Public Health District issued a three-day no-contact advisory for parts of Liberty Bay after about 2,000 gallons of sewage spilled near the Keyport boat ramp.

The Kitsap Sun reports that the advisory stretches from Lemolo Point to Point Bolin and includes Nesika BayHealth officials say most of Liberty Bay wasn't impacted thanks to an outgoing tide.

The sewage spilled from a Kitsap County-managed waste water facility just before 9:30 a.m. Monday. The cause was not immediately known.

Warning signs were posted at public beaches in Keyport and Nesika Bay. Shellfish harvesting was already prohibited due to long-standing high levels of marine biotoxins.

The health district advises people to avoid swimming and other types of water contact until Thursday.

Boats and kayaks should be cleaned after exposure to the affected area.
