Local 4th grader's experiment helps find safety with melons

SEATTLE -- Alyssa Martinez stopped by our studio to demonstrate the experiment that just won her first place at the state STEM Science Fair.

Alyssa is heading in to 5th grade at Carter Lake Elementary on JBLM next year, and worked hard on her project. She wanted to show just how different helmets can be when it comes to safety; so she strapped melons into a bike helmet and a skateboarding helmet, and dropped them from varying heights to see how they fared.

She and her mom Heather recreated a portion of her experiment live on our morning show; watch the video to see the results.
