Lawyer receives suspended sentence for having sex with inmate, 'keistering' drugs into jail

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A lawyer accused of having sex with an inmate and smuggling hash oil into the Pierce County Jail in his rectum has received a suspended sentence.

The News Tribune reports (http://goo.gl/9Ch4Od ) 68-year-old William Mack Stoddard Jr. pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to introduce contraband and soliciting to deliver a controlled substance.

He received a 364-day suspended sentence Thursday.

Court documents say Stoddard visited a Pierce County Jail inmate 19 times between March 2015 and Feb. 2016. The lawyer wasn't the inmate's defense attorney.

The inmate said the two had sex during their meetings in exchange for Stoddard providing money for jail expenses. Stoddard also brought a butane lighter and hash oil to the inmate, who sold it to other inmates.

“It appears the suspects were 'keistering' the drugs to get them into the jail and then possibly sharing them with other inmates,” Pierce County Detective Ed Troyer said at the time of Stoddard's arrest.

A lawyer for Stoddard says he has closed his law practice.
