Michigan woman given 6-week break from jail to have baby

DETROIT -- A pregnant woman was granted a six-week release from a Michigan jail recently so she could have her baby.

Breanna Clever was sentenced to one year in jail after causing a fatal crash that killed motorcyclist Delbert “Bert” Loomis in August 2015, WXYZ reported.

Clever was driving on U.S. Route 23 near Clyde Road near Fenton when she made an illegal U-turn, causing Loomis to swerve and loose control of his motorcycle, according to WXYZ. Clever fled the scene and Loomis died two days later.

"I couldn't sleep at night if I knew that I had caused an accident like that and left the scene," said Julie Loomis, the wife of the victim.

Sometime before going to jail on March 15 to serve her sentence, Clever got pregnant, the television station reported.

Citing savings to tax payers not having to pay her medical bills, a judge Friday granted Clever a six-week break from her sentence to go and have her baby, according to WXYZ.

Clever will have to serve the six weeks on the back-end of her sentence, according to the television station.
