Truck hits, kills bicyclist near Chelan Airport

CHELAN, Wash. (AP) — The Chelan County Sheriff's Office is investigating a hit-and-run accident that left a 50-year-old bicyclist dead.

Officials say Gary Knowlton of Brewster was riding his bicycle on Apple Acres Road near the Chelan Airport on Saturday when he was struck by what was believed to be a red truck. The truck fled the scene.

It appears the truck and Knowlton were traveling in the same direction and the truck hit the bicyclist from behind.

The sheriff's office searched for a red truck that has extensive damage to the front end and possibly a broken windshield.

Officials said Monday that the vehicle was found Sunday afternoon unoccupied and abandoned in an orchard. Detectives continue to investigation the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the sheriff's office.
