Treatment ordered before dad can stand trial in beating

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — A father accused of beating his toddler at a Vancouver motel last month has been ordered to undergo mental health treatment before he can stand trial.

A competency evaluation ordered by a Clark County judge last week found Kyle Stephen Holder can't assist in presenting his defense. He is to undergo 90 days of treatment.

Holder has been charged with first-degree attempted murder.

The Columbian newspaper reports his 2-year-old daughter remains in critical condition at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, Oregon.

Deputies who arrived at the motel June 28 found Holder kicking the child. Authorities say in court documents that Holder threw the girl out the window and repeatedly threw her to the ground. A man in a neighboring room intervened and hit Holder with a baseball bat. Deputies subdued him with a Taser.
