1 dead, 1 injured after truck knocks construction workers off a lift



SEATTLE -- A construction worker was killed and another was seriously injured after a box truck struck a construction lift on an exit ramp on the West Seattle Bridge Friday .

The accident occurred at about 8 a.m. on the westbound exit ramp of the West Seattle Bridge, police said.

One worker fell about 15 feet to the exit ramp, suffering serious injuries, police said. The second worker fell about 50 feet to the surface street below the bridge deck, police said; a spokeswoman at Harborview Medical Center said that worker died of his injuries.

The two workers were Seattle Department of Transportation contractors who were working on the Fauntleroy Expressway Bearing Pad Replacement Project.

Traffic Collision Investigation detectives were on scene, processing the collision site and collecting evidence. The cause of the collision is unknown at this time and is the subject of the investigation, police said.

Both Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be investigating, police said.
