Don Shelton named Seattle Times editor

SEATTLE (AP) — Don Shelton, sports editor of The Seattle Times, has been named the publication's new editor.

The announcement was made Tuesday by Publisher Frank Blethen, who said, "Don is the perfect person to lead and inspire us through our essential next step in adapting to a rapidly changing, challenging and volatile environment."

Shelton became sports editor in 2009. During his tenure the section won 11 "top 10" awards at the Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) contest. Earlier this year the newspaper's sports department earned its first "Grand Slam" - winning four top 10 awards in the daily, Sunday and special sections in its circulation category as well as for its website.

Shelton, who has worked at The Seattle Times for 29 years, is a University of Idaho graduate who previously worked at the Yakima Herald-Republic, Bellevue Journal-American and Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

Shelton replaces Kathy Best, who announced last month she was leaving the paper to become editor of The Missoulian in Missoula, Montana.
