Mariners come up short in extra innings

 

DETROIT, Mich. - Justin Upton hit a line drive over the left-field wall in the 12th inning for his second home run of the game, lifting the Detroit Tigers to an 8-7 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.

Upton connected on a 2-2 pitch from Vidal Nuno (0-1) leading off the 12th.  Nuno had pitched two scoreless innings.

Aníbal Sanchez (4-7) worked a scoreless inning for the win.

Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer for the Tigers in the first inning that cleared a brick wall in right-center, bounced off a concrete concourse and out of Comerica Park.

Upton's first homer of the night, a two-run shot to center, gave Detroit a 7-6 lead in the seventh.
