Frantic father killed in crash while looking for 11-year-old child

TIETON, Wash. (AP) — Washington State Patrol troopers say a Tieton man was killed in a car crash while he frantically looked for his 11-year-old child, whom he thought to be missing.

The Yakima Herald reports Pedro Macedonio Dorantes was declared dead at the crash scene Wednesday night. Two younger children, a 5-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, were in the sport utility vehicle when it went off the road, and they reported that they thought Dorantes was on the phone while driving.

Patrol Sgt. Greg Tri says Dorantes had called authorities to report that he was concerned the 11-year-old was missing. The child turned up safe at Highland High School.

The younger children were taken to a Yakima hospital as a precaution. Troopers said intoxicants were not suspected in the crash, but the 43-year-old Dorantes was not wearing a seat belt.
