Officials: 2 corrections officers assaulted by inmate at Monroe prison

MONROE, Wash. (AP) — State officials say two corrections officers were assaulted by a prison inmate and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Washington Department of Corrections officials said in a news release the officers were assaulted by 32-year-old James Suber Tuesday morning after his cell was searched at the Monroe Correctional Complex-Washington State Reformatory Unit.

Officials say Suber hit one of the officers in the head with his fist and another officer was struck when he intervened. No weapons were involved. It's unclear what led to the incident.

One of the officers received stitches. Both officers were expected to be released from the hospital on Tuesday.

Suber has been in prison since 2006 for first-degree burglary with sexual motivation out of Pierce County. He was sentenced to 17 years.

Police are investigating.
