17-year-old charged as adult in shooting death of Burien girlfriend

SEATTLE (AP) — A 17-year-old boy was charged Monday with murder in the shooting of his girlfriend in Burien.

Gianni Cunningham was charged as an adult Monday with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Court documents say Cunningham fabricated a drive-by shooting story to blame others for Wednesday's shooting death of Kaylynn Voegele, 17, at an apartment complex in Burien.

Documents say a neighbor told sheriff's detectives he watched through his peephole as the boy played with a handgun and then pulled the trigger near Kaylynn's face, instantly killing her.

Charging papers say the boy then fired two shots into a door apparently to make it look as though a drive-by shooting had occurred.

He was arrested Wednesday and is being held on $2 million bail.

Court documents say Cunningham had been on probation for carrying a loaded .45 semiautomatic handgun on the Rainier Beach High School campus in February.
