Man fatally shot in Alaska while trying to film people firing guns

SUTTON, Alaska (AP) — A 30-year-old Anchorage man was shot and killed while filming people shooting weapons in an area commonly used as a makeshift firing range near Sutton.

Troopers on Monday identified the victim as Adam C. Malaby, who was killed Saturday in the vicinity of Jonesville Mine Road.

“Investigation revealed Malaby had stepped in the line of fire while attempting to video or photograph others shooting and was shot by another individual that was firing a .40 caliber pistol,” troopers wrote in a Web posting.

According to troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain, the incident -- which appeared to be accidental -- did not occur at a formally designated shooting range in Sutton, but in an area commonly used as a shooting range. It wasn’t immediately clear how many people had been firing guns at the time.

It wasn't immediately clear if Malaby was photographing with the permission of the shooters.

Troopers' spokeswoman Megan Peters says in an email to The Associated Press that the situation is under investigation, and troopers haven't provided further information on the context of the incident.
