After collision, car veers through part of Kent apartment, just misses occupant by 10 feet (PHOTOS)

KENT, Wash. -- A station wagon struck a SUV from behind on SE 240th Street Wednesday, then continued for one block before crashing through a fence, taking out part of an occupied apartment unit and crashing into a tree, authorities said.

"The two adults in the station wagon were shaken up but declined aid from the Kent RFA firefighters," Kent Regional Fire Authority Capt. Kyle Ohashi said.

However, the driver of the SUV was sent to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, he added.

A man in the apartment was about 10 feet from the point of impact and was struck by flying glass, but did not need to be transported to a hospital, Ohashi said.

Firefighters found debris for 100 feet around the impact site, and a propane bottle from a BBQ that was run over ended up against the apartment complex’s office over 200 feet away, he said.  A Kent building official was brought to the scene to determine if the building was structurally affected. He recommended some shoring of the exterior for the safety of the occupants.

Kent Police are continuing their investigation of the incident.
