Soccer star Abby Wambach arrested for DUI in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Abby Wambach, the leading scorer in international soccer history and two-time Olympic gold medalist, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on Saturday night, according to Portland Police.

Officers said the retired soccer star was pulled over after failing to stop for a red light on Southwest 13th Avenue & Taylor Street just after 11 p.m.

During the traffic stop, Wambach showed signs of intoxication, then failed field sobriety and breath tests, law enforcement said.

She booked into Multnomah County Jail on DUI charges, then released on her own recognizance.

Portland Police said Wambach was polite and cooperative throughout the investigation.

Sunday morning, she took to Facebook expressing regret and apologizing to her family, friends and fans.

The 35-year-old women's soccer star helped lead the U.S. Women's National Team to victory in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.

She announced her retirement in October.

Prior to that, Wambach had been acquired by the Seattle Reign, though she never played for the team.

She played her final match for the USWNT in December, concluding her career with 252 international appearances with 184 goals.
