SALEM, Ore. (KPTV) — A Salem family said they now fear for their safety after dozens of rats have swarmed their home, and they think it’s all because their neighbor is feeding them.

The family said they moved into their South Salem home last year and things were fine at first, but then came the constant squeaking.

Soon after, they found rats by the dozens.

So many, in fact, the family said rat holes and tunnels are now creating an erosion problem in the neighborhood. As the infestation grew, they say their own deck has been compromised.

The family claims it’s all because of a neighbor who is feeding the rats.

“We’d like to use our yard for the things we like to do. Have our kids run around, have our dogs run around and play together, but now we have the issue of having a hoard of rats behind our house,” said Jay Willms.

Salem Police said the neighbor has picked up the food to stop feeding the rats, and officers plan to reinspect the place tomorrow to be sure.
