Police officers rush into burning Tukwila home to save man; arson suspected

TUKWILA, Wash. -- Two police officers rushed into a burning home Friday afternoon to save a man as flames shot out the windows and smoke billowed into the air.

Officials on the scene of the fire say both officers went to Valley Medical Center in Renton to be treated for smoke inhalation but doctors released them soon after.

Investigators say someone intentionally set the home on fire on the 5600 block of 150th Street South. Paramedics on scene treated the man police rescued and then officers detained him for questioning.

"Police and fire officers determined early that the fire was intentionally set," a Tukwila press release said later. "Police and Fire investigators are still investigating the exact cause of the fire. One adult male was detained at the scene as a person of interest.  The investigation continues."

Investigators will return to the scene of the blaze Saturday morning. Shortly after the blaze was extinguished, many praised the efforts of those police officers.

Michael Grewal witnessed the flames shooting into the air and watched as officers rushed in to help.

Grewal said, "I would really like to thank them because it’s because of them that our community is really safe."
