Lawsuit filed over E. coli outbreak linked to dairy festival

SEATTLE (AP) — A school district is among the targets of a lawsuit over an E. coli outbreak linked to sickened kids who attended a dairy festival field trip.

The Seattle Times reports (http://bit.ly/1pgCa4r) families of six kids sickened after last year's Milk Makers Fest say the Lynden School District, the Whatcom County Dairy Women and the Northwest Washington Fair Association did not follow state and federal guidelines for infection prevention.

Investigators found the same E. coli types linked to the illnesses in samples from a barn where animals were previously exhibited.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 60 people were sickened and 11 were hospitalized.

Lynden School District's superintendent said the district sympathizes with the families.

The women's group and fair association did not respond to requests for comment.
