Seattle's newest tent city opens with 8 tiny houses

SEATTLE -- Seattle opened its newest tent city Tuesday.

Othello Village has eight tiny houses and platforms to hold a number of tents for families, couples and singles who have no place to live.

The Low-Income Housing Institute, or LIHI, owns the property. It built the tiny homes, and it expects to expand to 16 mini-houses soon.

Three families moved into the small homes Tuesday, as well as others who moved into tents.

LIHI says too many homeless people are dying on the streets from exposure, from violence, even from suicide. Othello Village will give them a "safe place to live."

LIHI is looking for donations to help add more tiny houses.
