Seattle considers new ordinance to set rules for employees' work schedules (VIDEO)

SEATTLE -- The city of Seattle is considering a new ordinance that would force local businesses to give their employees a more predictable work schedule.

Retail and restaurant workers often work shifts at different times of the day during the week, with little notice what their schedule will be in the coming days.

At a hearing Tuesday, members of the City Council heard how the unpredictable work schedules affect those employees, many of whom have child care issues to deal with.

Supporters of the proposed ordinance want to require employers to make schedules at least a week in advance, with at least 11 hours between shifts.

The City Council may begin drafting legislation next month.
