Ex-halfway house manager gets 30 1/2 years in prison for killing boarder who resisted sexual advances

EVERETT, Wash. -- Kenny Tate, the former manager at an Everett halfway house, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 1/2 years in prison for killing a boarder who resisted his sexual advances.

In February, Tate, 40, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder with a deadly weapon. He admitted that he was motivated to kill Daniel Dubeau, 30, out of a desire to have sex with Dubeau, who refused his advances.

In court documents, Everett police detectives said that Tate told them he had no regrets about killing Dubeau because he was "slow" and was doing him a favor.

Tate said he lured the man to his room on Dec. 2, 2015, with methamphetamine and, when Debeau refused his sexual advances, he choked him, wrapped a belt around his neck and strangled and punched him until he stopped struggling. Then he had sex with the victim and watched pornography, court documents said.
