Deputy who shot at gun-wielding driver in Leavenworth named

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of the deputy who shot a pickup truck driver in central Washington after he displayed a gun.

The Chelan County Sheriff's Office says deputy Lee Risdon is on administrative leave after shooting Robert Friess in the hand early Tuesday.

Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett says as Risdon approached the vehicle in a Leavenworth parking lot, Friess, from Cheyenne, Wyoming, displayed a gun and the deputy fired. It's unclear if Friess fired.

Friess then led deputies on a pursuit on U.S. Highway 2. Troopers deployed spike strips near Cashmere and the truck eventually came to rest in a ditch.

Burnett says Friess surrendered after a brief standoff. He had a gunshot wound to the hand and was taken to a Seattle hospital.

A regional investigations team is reviewing the incident.
