Deputy shot at gun-wielding driver in Leavenworth, sheriff says

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a central Washington sheriff's deputy fired shots at a pickup truck driver after he displayed a gun.

Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett says that as the deputy approached the vehicle in a Leavenworth parking lot early Tuesday, 66-year-old Robert Friess, from Cheyenne, Wyoming, displayed a gun and the deputy fired. It's not clear if Friess also fired.

Friess reportedly then took off, leading two deputies on a pursuit on U.S. Highway 2. Troopers deployed spike strips to puncture the truck's tires near Cashmere, but it continued for a mile before coming to rest in a ditch.

Burnett says Friess surrendered after a brief standoff. He had a gunshot wound to the hand and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

A regional investigations team is reviewing the incident.
