Pierce County to vote on gun use in Graham-Kapowsin area

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Pierce County officials are considering whether to allow the use of firearms on more than 2,000 acres of unincorporated land in the Graham-Kapowsin area.


The News Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1XWDtRu ) that the County Council will vote on the proposed ordinance amendment Tuesday.

The proposal would allow firearms use in an area where shooting has been banned since 2002. It comes after residents petitioned the county to exclude their area from the 43-square-mile territory.

The residents in support of lifting the shooting ban say they want to be able to hunt and shoot predators that target their chickens and livestock. But opponents say prohibiting firearms use is necessary to ensure residents' safety.

County council votes have reduced the restricted shooting area by 750 acres in the last two years.
