17-year-old North Mason student accused of raping cousin, 14, in parking lot

BELFAIR, Wash.  – Court documents show that a 14-year-old North Mason High School student told police she was raped by her 17-year-old cousin in the school parking lot last Wednesday.

The girl said her cousin lured her out to a friend’s car, saying he had something important to tell her about the family.

She said when she got there, he told her he wanted to have sex. She said she refused because he is her cousin, and because he had a girlfriend.

Deputies are working through surveillance tape from a camera that points at the lot to see if the incident was recorded.

"This is a student parking lot that's actually kind of separated from the campus so it's not like they are going to be running around and this is out in the parking lot right in front of the school,” Mason County sheriff’s office chief deputy Ryan Spurling said.

Deputies said the girl told staff members immediately, and that a school counselor called 911.

The boy was in court Wednesday. He hasn’t been charged, but is being held on investigation of second-degree rape. Bail was set at $50,000.

“It's a small community so it'll affect the community greatly and we want to make sure that people understand if there are any sexual assaults of any kind to report them,” Spurling said.
