'Don’t know how someone could do that:’ Mom wants justice for son severely injured in hit-and-run

SEATTLE -- A 22-year-old Everett man may never walk again after a hit-and-run driver left him for dead.

Scotty Becktell’s mother, Lynn Becktell, flew into Seattle on Saturday to be by her son’s side.

“I just don’t know how someone could do that,” said Lynn. “ Today actually he did open his eyes and recognized his mom.”

The crash happened Saturday  just before 10 p.m. at 128th Street and 8th Avenue West in Everett. Police said the driver of a large black SUV hit Scotty while he crossed the street on his way to work.

The driver didn’t stop. Scotty’s sister passed the crash scene only 10 minutes later, having no idea medics rushed her brother to the hospital.

“The person that hit him took off and left him on the side of the road for dead,” Lynn said.

Police believe the SUV could have damage to its front end.

Lynn wants justice for her son, and she and police need help to find the vehicle and driver.

“Talk to your neighbors, talk do your co-workers,” said Lynn. “Lets get this out here and find this person, for Scotty’s sake. I want him to have some justice.”

Lynn said her son was awake and alert for the first time since the accident. Tragically, Scotty’s nephew was also struck at the same intersection in Everett nearly one year ago. Arrests were never made in that case, said Lynn.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

A crowdsourcing website has been set up to help Scotty’s family pay for his medical bills.
