Weekend weather brings snow and dangerous driving conditions to mountain passes

SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. -- Western Washington's latest round of winter weather caused big headaches for drivers on the mountain passes Saturday morning.

Eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 were closed near North Bend for more than two hours, following several spin-outs in the area.

Lanes reopened just before 10:30 a.m. and WSDOT crews will be monitoring the roads throughout the weekend.

The roads are still treacherous and snow tires or chains may be required.

WSDOT is planning another round of avalanche control, between Denny Creek and Price Creek, at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Both directions of traffic will be stopped during that time.

Drivers should check the conditions before heading out this weekend, as snow continues to blanket the mountain passes.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. Saturday. An avalanche warning is active for the west slopes of the western Cascades until 6 p.m.

For coastal counties, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 4 a.m. Monday. Waves could hit 23 feet on Sunday.

Sunday's system will bring more rain to the lowlands and snow to the mountains.
