Police investigating SPD officer-involved shooting of Department of Corrections escapee

UPDATE:  A Washington State Department of Corrections spokesman confirmed to Q13 News that Slade was not one of the inmates that were mistakenly released early, due to a miscalculation.

Seattle police have identified the man shot by an SPD officer as 31-year old James Linwood Slade.  "At the time of the confrontation, he (Slade) was wanted in all 50 states for escaping from Washington Department of Corrections community custody.  The underlying offense for his DOC status is assault.  The warrant, dated January 4, 2016, indicates that Slade has a violent history and may be armed."

SEATTLE - Police detectives are investigating a Seattle police officer-involved shooting on Queen Anne hill.  According to witnesses, a man tried to carjack a woman's car at the in the 1500 block of Queen Anne Ave North just before 2 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses said the man jumped into the woman's car with the woman inside, and the car crashed.   The man then jumped out and ran.  Seattle police arrived and reportedly chased the man towards Kerry Park, police said.

Witnesses reported hearing police officers telling the man to put down a knife.

One officer used a Taser to try and subdue the man, without success, police said.  Another officer fired at least one shot, wounding the man. .

Medics transported the man to Harborview Medical Center with injuries that appear to be non-life threatening, police said.

According to police, the man is an African-American in his 30s.

Per department policy, the officer involved in the the shooting will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

As per SPD policy, designed in collaboration with the Department of Justice, detectives from the Force Investigation Team and Crime Scene Investigators are on-scene with representatives from the Office of Professional Accountability to collect evidence and review the incident, police said.
