AUBURN, Wash. (AP) — A pedestrian was hit and killed Tuesday morning by a Sounder commuter train just north of Auburn.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas says the train operated by a BNSF crew was traveling from Tacoma to Seattle when the accident happened at about 6:45 a.m.

Both freight and passenger train service was stopped in the area south of Seattle for the investigation.

By 7:30 a.m., the tracks had been cleared and a new train crew was being brought in to continue the route.

Melonas says this was the 26th train-pedestrian fatality in 2015, which is the highest number of fatal train accidents in Washington state in the past 20 years.
