SHELTON, Wash. — Two Shelton High School students were arrested Tuesday for allegedly being in possession of a loaded, small-caliber handgun on campus, Police Chief Darrin Moody said.

School officials were notified at about 10 a.m. that a student saw a handgun in the backpack of another student in class. Shortly after, two students who allegedly had been in possession of the gun were taken into custody and the loaded handgun was recovered from a garbage can on campus, he said.

The two students were taken to the Shelton Police Department and then booked into the Mason County Juvenile Hall for being in possession of a weapon on a school campus.

The police, school district and staff said they  applauded the student who “did the right thing” and reported seeing the gun.
