WWU student speaks out about death threats: 'Some of these comments were racially charged'

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Belina Seare says she is in fear for her life and the lives of her classmates on the campus of Western Washington University after several anonymous people posted hateful comments, including death threats, on social media websites.

"Some of these comments were racially charged death threats and threats of sexual violence against me," Belina said.

Belina claims she took her concerns to campus security officer who told her there was little they could do.

Several students brought their concerns to the WWU admissions office and officials decided to cancel classes Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Bruce Shepard, president of WWU, said, "We are hearing ... our students of color saying they do not feel safe coming to our campus at all, given whats happening out there on social media. We take that very seriously."

On Wednesday, the university announced it would provide additional security for any students that were threatened online. Police officers are also serving a warrant on sites like "YikYak" to learn more about the anonymous posters who made the threats.

Classes will resume, as scheduled, on Monday, November 30.
