Inmate kicks out window, attempts escape on busy freeway

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - A handcuffed and shackled inmate was seriously injured after he kicked out the passenger's side window of a police transport van on a freeway and jumped out of the moving vehicle, authorities in suburban Phoenix said.

Adam Arlington was being brought to the Maricopa County jail in downtown Phoenix about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in a city of Gilbert police van.

Police say the 31-year-old Arlington was going to be booked on a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct after he was unable to post bond.

Gilbert police Sgt. Jesse Sanger says Arlington suffered a head injury and was recaptured after running across Interstate 10 in Tempe.

Sanger says Arlington was taken to a Phoenix hospital and listed in serious condition.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say Arlington was combative toward state troopers and fire department personnel who responded.
