Inslee declares state of emergency in Washington in wake of storm destruction

OLYMPIA -- Gov. Jay Inslee on Wednesday declared a state of emergency in Washington, a day after a major fall storm toppled trees and power lines, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands, and causing flooding of homes and property. Three people were killed during the storm.

Inslee's action  activates the Washington National Guard where needed and clears the way for state officials to ramp up aid to those suffering storm damage.

Cleanup crews were out Wednesday removing debris from downed trees, restoring power and monitoring flooding rivers throughout the state.

"State agencies and departments are directed to utilize state resources ... and to do everything reasonably possible to assist affected political subdivisions in an effort to respond to and recover from the event," his proclamation said in part.

It added, "As a result of this event, I also hereby order into active state service the organized militia of Washington State to include the National Guard and the State Guard, or such part thereof as may be necessary in the opinion of the Adjutant General, to perform such duties as directed by competent authority of the Washington Military Department in addressing this event."

He said the storm damage and its effects "continue to impact the life and health of our citizens, as well as the property and infrastructure, all of which is a public disaster that affects life, health, property, or the public peace."
