Police investigating three 'suspicious' fires in West Seattle; residents concerned of possible hate crime

WEST SEATTLE -- The Seattle Fire Department is investigating three fires it considers suspicious set over the last two days in West Seattle.

On Sunday, neighbors awoke to two cars engulfed in flames coming from their cars parked in the 2700 block of SW Sylvan Heights in West Seattle. Residents were able to quickly put out the fires, which appeared to be intentionally set, Seattle fire officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Then on Monday morning, fire crews responded to a fire at a Seattle Housing Authority building near the intersection of 35th Avenue SW and SW Holly Street. Crews put out the fire quickly, officials said, and no one was injured.

Police now say that fire was also intentionally set, less than a mile from the cars. And neighbors are worried the building may have been targeted because the upper half serves as a neighborhood mosque.

One local resident who attends the mosque says he's very concerned that the building was targeted.

"It's scary," the unnamed man said. "I don't know who is doing this kind of stuff. It's probably some crazy people."

Officials aren't sure the fires are connected, but are continuing to investigate. ATF agents were on the scene Monday morning.
