Grocery chain Haggen finds buyers for 36 stores in California, Nevada

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — Grocery chain Haggen has found buyers for 36 of its stores in California and Nevada.

The Bellingham Herald reports (http://goo.gl/WYGA1X ) the grocer said Monday it will sell one Nevada store and 27 in Southern California to Smart & Final LLC. They will sell eight Southern California stores to Gelson's Markets.

The deals are part of Bellingham-based Haggen's bankruptcy plan to downsize from 164 to 37 stores and leave the Southwest market.

In September, Haggen asked a bankruptcy court for permission to close 100 stores, including all of those in California and Nevada.

Haggen has now filed a motion in court to establish a bid and auction process for the rest of the stores it announced it was closing.
