Mariners to hire former Angels general manager

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners have hired a new general manager, just a week before the disappointing 2015 season comes to a close.

The Mariners are offered the vacant GM position to Jerry DiPoto, former Los Angeles Angels general manager, the team announced Monday.

Jim Bowden of ESPN first reported the news on Twitter.

Seattle Mariners President Kevin Mather confirmed the news, saying Dipoto will make a media appearance Tuesday.

"Jerry impressed us at each step of the process," Mather said. "He has a very unique skill set, having been a succesful player in the Majors, then moving into front office with steadily increasing responsibilities."

Dipoto joins the club a month after the team fired former general manager Jack Zduriencik in the midst of a likely losing season. The Mariners haven't made it to the playoffs since 2001 when the team won 116 games in the regular season, tying a major league record.

"I'm honored to be joining the Mariners family," Dipoto said.

The 47-year-old former ballplayer served as the GM of the Angeles from 2011 until 2015. He resigned his post after alleged disagreements with Angeles Manager Mike Scioscia.

Dipota is known to have a predilection for advanced statistical analysis, and giving advanced stats to players in an effort to boost their performance.
