No drugs found in blood of driver who crashed into 4 students near Ferndale, killing 2

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Tests showed no drugs in the blood of a driver who plowed into four high school students near Ferndale, killing two, on June 10, it was reported Thursday.

The Bellingham Herald, citing court records filed this week, said charges that William Jeffrey Klein, 34, of Bellingham, was under the influence of a drug at the time of the accident are going to be dropped.

He still faces two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault.

Klein told police he fell asleep at the wheel after getting off work when his SUV jumped the curb and plowed into four Windward High School students near Ferndale.

Two students, Shane Ormiston, 18, and Gabriel Anderson, 15, were killed, and two others were injured with broken bones. The students had been on a walk with their gym class as the time of the accident.

Klein had told police that he often smoked marijuana, but he hadn't smoked that day. Police said they suspected he had been impaired by a drug.

But all blood tests came back negative, the documents said, according to the Herald.

Klein, who bailed out of jail in June, is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 28.
