Construction worker found unconscious in ditch dies at hospital

BELLEVUE -- A construction worker died Tuesday morning in Bellevue after suffering a medical emergency, crews said, and falling into a ditch filled with water.

According to Ryan Armstrong of the Bellevue Fire Department, crews received a call around 9:47 a.m. of a worker who was found face down in a 10-foot hole filled with about two feet of water.

Construction employees took the worker out of the ditch, Armstrong said, and administered CPR until emergency crews arrived at the scene near the corner of 116th Avenue NE and NE 4th Street in Bellevue. Fire crews were able to get a pulse from the victim, Armstrong said, but the man later died at the hospital.

The worker apparently suffered some sort of medical emergency before falling into the ditch, Bellevue Police Officer Seth Tyler said. He was last seen alive about 15 minutes before he was found in the water. It does not seem there was any sort of industrial accident, and his fall was likely related to a medical emergency, Tyler said.

Detectives are at the construction site investigating the incident, police officers said. The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries is also investigating.
