Fast-moving wildfire grows to 50 acres north of Shelton in Mason County

SHELTON, Wash. -- Firefighters were battling a fast-moving 50-acre wildfire in the Skokomish Valley area off Sunnyside Road, Central Mason Fire said Thursday night.

Multiple agencies were on the scene, and firefighters were using bulldozers to try to cut a line around the fire, which was burning both brush and timber.

The fire started Thursday night. The cause wasn't immediately known.

Crews were trying to keep the fire from jumping Sunnyside Road and the Skokomish River and spreading in that direction, Central Mason Fire said.

Their big concern is the wind, which picked up considerably Thursday night, a spokeswoman said.

There have been no reports of injuries or evacuations. But Central Mason Fire said residents in the area have been put on alert.

State Department of Natural Resources crews had taken over the firefighting operation.
