Off-duty Tacoma police officer fatally shoots armed robbery suspect

TACOMA -- Tacoma police say an off-duty police officer fatally shot an armed robbery suspect Wednesday evening.

Investigators were called to the scene of the officer-involved shooting shortly before 7 p.m. near S. 56th Street and S. Washington Street.

Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Loretta Cool told Q13 FOX News the incident started when a man robbed a woman. Two witnesses chased and tried to confront the suspect who then pulled out a gun, she said.

She said an off-duty officer in the area spotted the crime in progress, identified himself to the suspect, and eventually opened fire and shot the suspect.

Cool said the suspect got about half a block away in a vehicle before crashing. It is unclear if the suspect was shot inside or outside of the vehicle.

The suspect was transported to the hospital, but died later, police said.

Multiple police agencies were at the scene, and several roads were blocked off in the area for the investigation.

No further details have been released at this time.
