5-year-old boy dies after salt block falls off truck on freeway

EMMETT, Idaho (AP) — A 5-year-old boy injured when a salt block fell off a truck in southwestern Idaho and went through the windshield of another vehicle has died.

Idaho State Police say the boy died Tuesday after being injured on Saturday afternoon.

Police say 66-year-old Ronald Morgenthaler of Weiser was driving north on State Highway 52 with two pallets of salt blocks on a flatbed truck when the pallets became loose on a curve and multiple blocks fell off.

Police say one of the salt blocks went through the windshield of a vehicle following behind and struck a 26-year-old passenger in the front seat, and then struck the boy in the head in the back seat.

The boy's name hasn't been released.
