LOS ANGELES (AP) — An Albanian athlete who disappeared from the Special Olympics in Los Angeles has turned up safe 350 miles away in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Hayward.

Acting Lt. Guy Jakub of the Hayward Police Department says 44-year-old Andi Gusmari came to the police station on his own at 2 a.m. Monday.

Jakub says Gusmari is safe and comfortable but there’s a communication problem.

Police don’t know how Gusmari got to Hayward. He disappeared from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles sometime after 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Jakub says personnel from the Special Olympics will come to Hayward to pick up Gusmari, who participated in bowling competitions at the games, which closed Sunday.
