71-year-old man facing eviction kills apartment manager, then himself

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — A man who was to be evicted from his Springfield apartment shot and killed the property manager and then took his own life.

Springfield police say the shooter, a 71-year-old man, shot the apartment manager just after noon Friday. Officials told KVAL (http://bit.ly/1KCbBNb ) the manager, a 39-year-old man, was serving an eviction notice when he was shot.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The shooter barricaded himself inside his apartment. After officers tried to negotiate with him, a SWAT team fired tear gas inside and stormed the apartment.

They found the man inside, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital, where he also died.

Police have not released the identities of the victim or the shooter.
