5 rescued from Lake Washington after boats collide

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. (AP) — Seven people are safe after a fishing boat and power boat collided on Lake Washington early Friday.

Mercer Island police say officers responded at about 12:30 a.m. Friday after a caller reported that a 22-foot fishing boat and a 26-foot power boat had collided on the lake between Mercer Island and Newcastle.

The caller, who had been aboard the power boat, reported that the vessel was sinking and that all five passengers were in the water.

Rescuers were able to locate and remove all five from the water. They were treated at a nearby boat launch for minor injuries and hypothermia.

The power boat sunk. The fishing boat with two people on board made it safely to Bellevue.

Police say it's not known whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision.
