SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A Marion County sheriff's officer says a 24-year-old Salem, Oregon, man accused of beheading his mother's cat has been arrested.

Lt. Chris Baldridge said deputies responded after neighbors reported the man knocked on their door, covered in blood and wearing only boxer shorts.

Deputies found the man covered in scratches and bite marks.

They later found the decapitated cat inside the home.

Asked why he killed the cat, the man reportedly said, "because it is evil and nosy."

Baldridge said Rudi Espinoza has been arrested for investigation of two counts of aggravated animal abuse.

Bail was set Thursday at $100,000 and his next court appearance is scheduled July 7.

It was not known whether he had a lawyer.
